GARAGE SALES
Make A Few Extra Bucks With Garage Sales
We all have a bunch of stiff lying around the house that we never use. Maybe it is time you just throw it out.
Or wait! Maybe it is time to have a garage sale! Garage sales can be fun and also a great way to get some extra
cash. You may even have enough stuff that you can have a sale regularly and make even more money. In addition to
some unwanted stuff, you can also display crafts, artwork and other items you make for profit. Here are some tips
for a successful garage sale.
First of all, have everything neat and organized. People do not want to have to dig through boxes to discover
what hidden treasures you might have. If they don't see anything they like up front, they are likely to just get
back into their cars and find the next yard sale.
Once everything is out of boxes and nicely displayed, put prices on everything. Sure, some people will ask how
much something costs if they are truly interested. But by showing the price, it makes it easier on the potential
buyer in the event that you become busy with another customer and they don't feel like waiting for the answer.
That brings up another point. Price things reasonably. Remember, you do not want this stuff! The key is to get
rid of as much as possible. Lower prices mean more sales. Do not get caught up with how much you paid for it. The
fact is, it is old and used now. It does not have the value it used to, especially not to somebody else. Keep in
mind: this is a garage sale, not a boutique.
Know up front that people might ask you if you will take less than the asking price. Decide beforehand whether
you will do this. You may charge a little more with that in mind, but that may cost some sales, as not everybody is
going to try and bargain with you. It is usually best to price things for what you think is reasonable and then be
flexible, in particular if somebody plans on buying several items.
Most importantly, watch your stuff! Garage sales are fun. You can play some music, get some fresh air and chit
chat with the family. But you never know who is planning to pocket something without paying for it. Watching your
stuff also means constantly putting things back as you had them. Browsers can knock things over, pile stuff on top
of other stuff and leave things unkempt. Go through and fix things up to look nice during the day. And always give
your focus to the shoppers. You can gossip with your sister any time. The sale day is all about answering
customers' questions and promoting sales.
