GARDENING
How To Get Started In Gardening As A Hobby
Gardening doesn't have to be a difficult hobby to start. You can begin with something as simple as a large
flower pot and plant an indoor herb garden. Most hobby gardens eventually move into larger spaces, but much
enjoyment can be gained by planning and maintaining a small space garden plot.
If you have never planned a garden, there is much information available on the Internet. You should learn some
basic information about soils, watering, seasonal choices for plants and cultivating. A county extension agent
often has printed material available that is specific to your local weather and soil conditions. It can be
discouraging to try to grow plants that are meant for another climatic zone.
Soil is probably the most important factor in the successful garden. An understanding of correct pH balances
will help you to treat the soil that you will use for your growing medium. Different plants require different
levels of acidity. Plants that require a certain pH level will not thrive if the level is too high or too low. The
soil's temperature is important as well.
An appropriate level of water during each phase of plant growth is vital to success in your harvest. Many plants
don't like wet feet, but still must have plenty of water. Planning the garden will include planning for good soil
drainage so that plants get necessary water without sitting in pools of water for long periods. Watering is best
done during the cooler periods of the day to avoid burning the plants.
Care of the growing plants means removing weeds and other plants that would rob the garden crop of necessary
water and nutrients. Proper composting methods can reduce the number of unwanted plants, while providing essential
nutrients to the growing plants. Creating rich compost is part of the intermediate joy of gardening.
