Knitting - A Popular Hobby For Young And Old

Knitting is a hobby that has never dropped in popularity. Man has been using wool to make clothing and bedding for thousands of years. Today you can still find many people who enjoy designing and knitting their own garments, be it for personal use or profit.

If you are interested in taking up the hobby then there are a few basic pieces of equipment that you will need to get hold of. There is the actual wool, or yarn, and the needles.

The needles are not the typical small variety used in sewing, they are large and thick; resembling chopstick size in appearance. To begin with it is suggested a size eight or size seven set of needles would be adequate. The number determines the overall thickness of the needle, the lower the number the tighter the weave. Whether or not you want a loose or tight knit would be determined on what you are actually making.

When it comes to choosing the wool, the main factor will be the colors. Do you want to stick to one colored yarn or have a multi-colored design? The colors would not affect the overall price so much though you should release there are different quality wools available. For example Pashmina is known for its soft texture and expensive price.

To start with choose simple projects. A scarf will be far easier to get right than a pair of woollen gloves. The more time you spend knitting the easier it will become. Over time it will be almost automatic, you will not have to even look at your hands and needles. The most important stitches for a beginner to master are the purl and knit. From this you can progress to more complicated designs.

Knitting is a great pastime as you can share the fruits of your labor with your friends and family.
